Matthew Levey is a seasoned education leader and entrepreneur. In 2014 he founded the International Charter School (ICS) in Brooklyn. In just five years ICS grew from a concept to serving over 400 students and employing more than 60 professionals. Successfully generating and managing a $10 million annual budget, Levey did not require significant philanthropy to operate ICS. He was cited by education reporter Eliza Shapiro as one of a “few local charter leaders explicitly invested in creating more diverse schools.”

In addition to setting the school’s strategy and recruiting a powerful board of Trustees, Levey’s extraordinary communication skills attracted families from across Brooklyn to join ICS. His efforts were profiled in the New York Times and Reason Magazine.

Prior to ICS, Levey worked for a decade as a management consultant in the US and abroad. His work touched on strategy and tactics for financial services, non-profit, and manufacturing firms. At Columbia University, he earned an MBA, with honors.

Upon completing his undergraduate studies Levey was appointed as a Foreign Service Officer with the US State Department. Over his career he was posted to Ecuador, Romania, Bosnia and the Czech Republic. In Washington he served as an analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Levey speaks Spanish and Romanian.

Levey’s education writing has been published in The Daily News, Fordham Institute, Chalkbeat, Education Next and Crains.

Matthew would welcome hearing from you.
